Assonance(noun) an element of sound used by poets in which there is a vowel sound repeated in the middle or end of a word.
Alliteration(noun) an element of sound used by poets in which there is a consonant sound repeated at the beginning of words.
Speaker(noun) the narrator of a poem. Remember: the poet is not always the speaker.
Dialect(noun) a distinct way people talk based on their geographic region
Imagery(noun) the poet’s (or writer’s, in terms of prose) use of descriptive language in order to appeal to the audience’s five sense: sight, sound, smell, feel, hear.
Mood(noun) the audience’s feeling when reading a poem, prose writing, etc.
Tone(noun) the poet’s (or writer’s, in terms of prose writing) feeling toward his/her subject.
Symbolism(noun) when an object or person represents something else, often an idea
Verse(noun) A single line in a poem
Stanza(noun) One of the divisions of a poem, composed of two or more lines usually characterized by a common pattern of meter, rhyme, and number of lines.
Prose(noun) Writing that is not in verse, but typical structure
Rhyme Scheme(noun) is the pattern of rhyme between lines of a poem or song
Meter(noun) the pattern of repeating stressed and unstressed syllables in a line (verse) or poetry
Free Verse(noun) a poem written without any rhyme scheme.
End Ryme(noun) when a word at the end of one line sounds the same as a word at the end of another.
Figurative Language(noun) Language that describes something by comparing it with another thing, often for poetic or dramatic effect
Simile(noun) a figure of speech that indirectly compares two different things by employing the words "like", "as", or "than".
Metaphor(noun) a figure of speech that constructs an analogy between two things or ideas
Personification(noun) is giving human traits (qualities, feelings, action, or characteristicss) to non-living objects
Internal Conflict(noun) A struggle that takes place in a character's mind
External Conflict(noun) a struggle between the protagonist and another character against nature or some outside force
Main Idea(noun) The overall thought or message.
Theme(noun) the subject or topic.
