Chapter 4 Terms

Terminology associated with acceleration and momentum

AB
Air ResistanceThe frictional force air exerts on a moving object, opposite in direction to the object's motion
Centripetal ForceThe force that causes an object to move toward the center of a curve
Law of Conservation of MomentumA law stating that the total momentum of a group of objects does not change unless outside forces act on the objects
MomentumA property of any moving object; equals the object's mass times its velocity
Newton's First Law of MotionStates that an object moving at a constant velocity keeps moving at that velocity unless a net force acts on it
Newton's Second Law of MotionStates that an object accelerates in the directino of the net force applied to it
Newton's Third Law of MotionStates that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
ProjectileAny object shot or thrown through the air
Terminal VelocityThe greatest velocity reached by a falling object
Acceleration Due to GravityA constant with the value 9.81 m/s^2 (32 ft/s^2)
WeightThe measure of the force of gravity on an object, usually the force between Earth and an object at its surface
MassThe amount of matter in an object
