| Victorian Period | Poets make extensive use of classical myth, Arthurian legend with beautiful and musical qualities. Use of blank verse particularly with historical individuals. Verse syllables not counted, but there is a pattern of stresses. |
| Modern Period | marked by conventional lyric forms, but exploring connection between modern themes and classical and romantic ideas. |
| Postmodern Period | Revival of romanticism, strange effects of language, alternating from extreme simplicity to massive overstatement. |
