chalking | the deterioration of the surface of an exterior paint after weathering. The paint will appear faded and powdery. Chalk should be removed prior to repainting. |
latex | a term sometimes used to describe a water based paint. |
boxing | the mixing together of the different cans of like paint to be used on a job, to ensure consistency of color. |
bleeding | when there is an underlying substance or material that is shoeing through after the area is painted. This area needs to be painted separately with a product that will kill the stain and prevent the bleeding. |
cutting in | refers to the painting of a surface adjacent to another surface that must not be painted. Cutting in is normally done before the painter uses a roller to roll the surface such as a wall. |
alligatoring | a scaly pattern that appears on paint due to the inabaility of the paint to bod to a glossy coating beneath it. |
caulking | a generic term for a compound used to fill cracks, gaps, seams, and joints. |
sheetrock | comes in resistant or fire rated. Sheetrock also comes in different thicknesses such as 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch. |
green board sheetrock | a gypsum product which is green in color. This product is moisture resistant sheetrock that is used in wet areas such as in bathrooms or behind kitchen sinks. |
butt joint | the joint that is formed when the two ends of a peice of sheetrock are butted together. |
corner bead | a metal or vinyl product used to form outside corners on a sheetrock wall. The corner bead is applied with a crimping tool or nailed with galvanized nails. Sheetrock mud is then applied to form a smooth outside corner. |
