nationalism,  | pride in one's country. Ex. Germany under the Nazis, France under Napoleon |
nationalism,  | a group of people with a share cultural heritage that want their own nation. Ex. Prussia and Germanic states under Bismark |
imperialism,  | One nation controlling another politically, economically and socially. 1800s to mid 1900s. Ex. Britain controlling India. |
democracy,  | Form of gov't in which the people are in control. Ex. Britain after 1917. |
Absolute monarchy,  | Form of gov't in which a king or queen has complete control. Ex. Louis XIV of France, the XVI tried but was beheaded |
rigid social class structure,  | A social class system in which your position in society is determined by your birth. It cannot be changed. (ex. Hindu’s caste system in India, Old Regime in France) |
industrialization,  | production goes from making tools at home by hand with simple tools to mass production with machines. (ex. Britain in 1700s) |
urbanization,  | movement of people from the rural areas to the cities. (ex. Manchester, England in the 1700s) |
capitalism,  | economic system in which the means of production (factories, farms, etc.) are owned by private individuals. (ex. Great Britain in 1800s) Also referred to as free market. |
Marxist Communism,  | an economic system in which the community owns and controls the means of production (factories, farms, etc.). A form of socialism. It is supposed to be a classless society in which the government will wither away. (ex. Israeli kibbutz) |
revolution,  | sudden or drastic change in condition. It may be political, economic or social. (ex. French Revolution, Green Revolution and Industrial Revolution) |
laissez-faire capitalism,  | economic system in which private individuals own and control the production of distribution of goods and wealth in a country. Without government interference. (ex. No where, the U.S. in the 19th century is closest) |
apartheid,  | legalized segregation of the races in the Rep. of South Africa, from 1945-1991. Ex. blacks and coloreds not allowed to vote, separate schools and curriculums. |
Meiji Restoration,  | Period lasting from 1868 to 1912 when Japan adopted Western ways in order to become a modern and industrialized nation. Ex. Gov’t ended feudalism and centralized the gov’t and created a capitalist economy. |
totalitarianism,  | gov’t in which one person or group controls all aspects of political, economic and social life – w/o respect for individual rights. Ex. Soviet Union under Stalin, N. Korea, Nazi Germany, Ancient Sparta. |
genocide,  | Deliberate effort to kill all members of a group of people. Ex. Ireland’s potato famine, Forced famine in the Ukraine, Armenian Christians in Ottoman Empire, Holocaust, Rwanda killing of the Tutsi’s in 1990s, Pol Pot’s regime in Cambodia. |
civil disobedience,  | Refusal to obey unjust laws and to accept the punishment for not following them. Passive resistance and non violent. Ex. Gandhi’s resistance to British rule in India. |
human rights,  | Freedom and rights that all people are entitled to. Ex. freedom of expression, life, right to vote, equal protection under the law, freedom from forced servitude. |
traditional economy,  | Economic system in which all economic decisions are made based on custom and habit. |
