Fossil Types

AB
What is a MOLD?A hollow impression left in sedimentary rock
What is a CAST?A solid copy of an organism
What is a PETRIFIED fossil?Fossil in which minerals have replaced all or part of the organism. There may be parts of the organism preserved inside it.
What are PRESERVED REMAINS?Organisms preserved with hardly any change to their original form. Parts such as wings and leaves are often preserved.
What is a TRACE FOSSIL?A hollow impression left in mud or sediment that shows activity of the organism.
What is a CARBON FILM?A thin coating of black left on rock.
How is a MOLD formed? This fossil is formed after organisms press into sediment. This is usually formed from hard parts of organism such as bones or shells.
How is a CAST formed? This fossils is formed when sediment settles into a mold and turns into sedimentary rock, making a solid copy of the organism.
How is a PETRIFIED fossil formed? This fossil is formed when organisms (often plants) have water rich in minerals seep inside of them. These minerals then harden and crystallize inside the organism, making solid copy of organism made of minerals.
How is a TRACE fossil formed? This fossil is formed when an organism steps in sediment or mud, the print is buried in sediment and then turns into sedimentary rock.
How is a CARBON FILM formed? This type of fossil is formed when black material (element found in all life forms) settles out of organism, organism decays and evaporates.
How is PRESERVED REMAINS formed? This fossil can keep delicate parts of an organism in glaciers (ice), hardened tree sap (amber) or in tar that seeps into bones of organism.
Step 1 to making a fossilFishy-fishy dies & sinks to bottom of shallow body of water
Step 2 to making a fossilFishy-fighy's soft parts decompose as he is covered in sediment
Step 3 to making a fossilThe layers of sediment around fishy-fishy's hard parts compacts & cements into sedimentary rock
Step 4 to making a fossilWeathering and erosion remove the layers of rock above the fossil, exposing it
