| Backward compatible | New hardware and software used to support older and existing technologies. |
| BIOS | basic input/output system: Firmware that controls much of a computer's input/output functions, such as communications with the floppy drive, RAM, chips, and the monitor. |
| Firmware | Software that is permanently stored in a chip. |
| Pixel | The smallest dot that can be addressed by software by a monitor screen. An image is composed of many of these. |
| RAM | Temporary memory storage on chips, such as SIMMs, inside the computer. Information in this disappears when the computer power is turned off. |
| ROM | Chips that contain programming code and can not be erased. |
| SIMM | A miniature circuit board used in a computer to hold RAM. It holds 8, 16, 32, or 64 MB on a single module. |
| RIMM | A type of memory module used on newer system boards. |
| DIMM | A miniature circuit board used in newer computers to hold memory. It can hold 16, 32, 64, or 128 MB of RAM on a single module. |
| Bus | The paths, or lines, on the system board which data, instructions, and electrical power travels. |
