Common terms used in digital graphic design.

AB
Anti-AliasingSmoothing or blending the transition of pixels in an image. Makes the edges appear smooth
Bitmap Image (bmp)graphic image stored as a specific arrangement of screen dots
CompressionA method of packing data in order to save disk storage space or download time.
DPIStands for dots per inch. Specifies the resolution of an output device.
ExportTo save a file in a different format (that of another program).
Fontcomplete set of characters in a particular size and style of type.
FTPStands for File Transfer Protocol. FTP allows you to copy or send files from one computer to another via the Internet.
GIFStands for Graphics Interchange Format. Displays up to 256 colors.
HexadecimalA numbering system which uses a base of 16. Used to color web pages.
InterlaceStoring partial data from a single graphic image in multiple sequences to have a partial image initially appear on screen rather than having to wait for the image to appear in its entirety.
JPG or JPEGAbbreviation for Joint Photographic Experts Group. File format images allow for more colors than GIF images and are usually smaller in size.
Kilobytestorage unit capable of storing 1,024 bytes of information.
Lossless Compressiondata compression technique where the file quality is preserved and no data is lost.
Lossy Compressiontechnique of shrinking file sizes by giving away some precision of detail.
Multimediaform of communication combining text with graphics, page layout, video, audio, animation, and so forth.
PDFStands for Portable Document Format. Created by Adobe Systems in its software program Adobe Acrobat as a universal browser.
PNGStands for Portable Network Graphics format. Used for lossless compression and displaying images on the web.
PPIStands for pixels per inch.
RGBStands for Red, Green, Blue
Sans Serifstyle of typeface that means "without feet." Common typeface is Arial.
Saturationcolor intensity of an image.
Serifstyle of typeface that has "little feet." Most common is Times Roman.
Thumbnailsmall version of a graphic image.
Vector Graphicgraphic image drawn in shapes and lines called paths.
WYSIWYGAbbreviation for What You See Is What You Get.
