| Search Engine | A Web site or part of a Web site that finds Web pages containing a search expression and displays a list of search results. |

| Web Robot | A program that automatically searches the Web to find new Web sites, updates information about old Web sites that are already in the database, and deletes information in the database when a Web site no longer exists; also called bot or spider. |
| Bot | Short for robot, a computer that sends malware to or communicates with other computers without the owner's knowledge to harm those computers or act with other bots to harm Web servers; also called zombie. |
| Results Pages | A page provided by a search engine that includes links to Web pages that match the search expression. |
| Sponsored Links | A link connected to the search expression that a company pays to place near the top of the results page. |
| Banner Ad | An advertisement that appears in a box on a Web page (usually at the top, and sometimes along the side or bottom of the page) |
| Specific Question | A type of question for searching the Internet that you can phrase easily and has only one answer. |
| Exploratory Question | A type of question for searching the Internet that starts with a general, open-ended question that leads to other, less general questions, which results in multiple answers. |
| Natural Language Query | A type of search expression that allows users to enter a question exactly as they world ask a person that question. |
| Web Directory | A list of links to Web pages compiled by human editors or computer organized into hierarchical categories. |
| Metasearch Engine | A search tool that searches multiple search engines simultaneously. |
| Subject Guide | A Web site that organizes links in categories and subcategories; also called clearinghouse, virtual library, or Web bibliography. |
| Annotations | Summaries or reviews of Web pages in some subject guides. |
| Search Filter | A search expression that eliminates Web pages from a search by specifying a language, date, domain, host, or page component (such as a URL, link, image tag, or title tag) or by specifying that the results pages will contain all or any fo the keywords. |
| Boolean Operators | Words that specify the logical relationship between the elements they join; the most common are AND, OR, and NOT; also called logical operators. |
| Precedence Operators | A way of clarifying the grouping within a complex Boolean expression usually indicated by parentheses; also called grouping operator or inclusion operator. |
| Location Operator | A word that lets a user search for keywords that appear close to each other in the text of a Web page; also called proximity operator. |
| Static Web Page | An HTML file that exists on a Web server computer. |
| Dynamic Web Pages | A Web page generated when a user submits a query; the Web server searches the database and generates a Web page on the fly that includes information form the database. |
| Deep Web | Dynamic Web pages and other Web pages that can be accessed only with a user name and password; also called hidden Web or invisible Web. |
