| compass rose | a small drawing on a map, used to show direction (N-E-S-W |
| key | a devise on a map that tells what real things and places the symbols on a map stand for |
| longitude | distance, measured in degrees, east and west of the prime meridian. These lines are imaginary circles. |
| latitude | distance, measured in degrees, north and south of the equator. These lines are used to locate places on a map. |
| landform | a feature of the earth’s surface, such as a mountain, hill, river, lake or ocean that is made by nature |
| physical map | a map that shows the elevation, water depth, and other |
| political map | designed to show governmental boundaries of countries, states, and counties, the location of major cities and they usually include significant bodies of water. These maps are often shown in color. |
| equator | the starting point (0 degrees) for measuring latitude, or distances north and south. It circles the earth halfway between the North and South Pole. |
| hemisphere | half of the earth or the globe |
| prime meridian | the starting point for measuring longitude, or distances east |
