A | B |
satellite image | a view such as of Earth created from information gathered by instruments on board a satellite |
physical processes | natural forces that change Earth's physical features including forces that build up and wear down Earth's surface |
time zones | an area that uses the same clock time. EArth is divided into 24 standard time zones. In each zone, clocks are set to the area's own hour and minute. |
core | The innermost part of Earth made of solid iron and surrounded by a layer of liquid iron. |
mantle | the middle layer of Earth that lies between the core and lithosphere. |
magma | molten or liquid rock that lies beneath Earth's crust. |
lithosphere | The outermost part of Earth, including a layer of solid rock and the Earth's crust |
crust | The hard outer layer of Earth. |
tectonic movement | The movement of plates below Earth's surface. |
volcano activity | The formation and eruption of volcanoes. |
erosion | The gradual wearing away of Earth's surface by the action of wind, water, ice and gravity. |
glaciation | The creation & movement of glaciers. |
tectonic plates | A large piece of Earth's crust that floats on the liquid mantle. |
fold mountain | A mountain that is created by the folding of Earth's crust. |
fault | a line on Earth's surface that results from a deep crack in the crust. |
fault line | A line on Earth's surface that occurs where there is a break in the crust. |
fault block mountain | A mountain created when a block of Earth's crust tilts upward as a result of tectonic movement |
lava | molten or liquid rock that flows out of a volcano. |
crater | A bowl-shaped hole in Earth's surface. |
V-shaped valley | A valley with a relatively narrow bottom formed by river. |
flood plain | The flat area around a river that is covered with sediment as a result of frequent flooding. |
sediment | Bits of soil left in a place by moving water. |
continental glacier | A large thick ice sheet that covers a vast area and moves outward in many directions. |
moraine | A mass of dirt and rock that has been left by a glacier as it retreats. |
horn | A sharp mountain peak shaped like a pyramid. |
U-shaped valley | A valley with a relatively flat bottom formed by a glacier. |
avalanche | The sudden movement of a large mass of ice, snow or rocks down the side of a mountain. |
