| First Estate | Top level of France's social system under the Old Regime. Consisted of clergymen. |

| Third Estate | The bottom level of France's social system under the Old Regime. Consisted of everyone else (non-nobility and non-clergy). |
| Bourgeoisie | Name for the wealthy members of the third estate who became leaders of the French Revolution. |
| Old Regime | Name for the monarchial system in France which legally set up the three estates. |
| Estates General | Representative assembly of the the three estates under the Old Regime. |
| Tennis Court Oath | Oath sworn by distraught members of the Estates General in the third estate, established themselves as the National Assembly of France. |
| Great Fear | A fear of vagabonds and outlaws who were rising up in revolution against nobility, and the population of France in general. |
| Cahiers | List of grievances taken by deputies before the Estates General met for the first time in 174 years. |
| National Assembly | Assembly formed by members of the third estate in the Estates General in response to the decision to continue the Estates General meeting in seperate groups. |
| Women's March on Versailles | About 7000 women, fed up with current conditions in France, marched to Versailles, demanded the king, ransacked the palace, and eventually brought the royal family back to Paris. |
| Assignats | Issued as recompense for confiscated church land, eventually became the currency of France. |
| Jacobins | Bourgeoisie revolutionary club, intially powerful in the National Assembly. Met in an old monastary in Paris of the same name. |
| Girondists | Political group that contested control of the National Convention with the Mountain. Eventually gained power over the Mountain, only to lose it later on. |
| Mountain | Contested control of the National Convention with the Girondists, and evntually gained all the power. Named such because the sat in the uppermost benches in the assembly hall. |
| Sans-Culottes | Working class of the third estate who wore pants as opposed to the accepted knee breeches. Joined forces with the Mountain. |
| Committee of Public Safety | Tried to establsih socialist system in France, price controls, etc.. Tried, and harshly punished those who comitted crimes during the Reign of Terror. |
| "Bread of Equality" | Bread that bakers were forced to make during the Reign of Terror, mixture of all available flours, and everyone had to eat it. |
| Reign of Terror | Time period of the revolution where the Mountain held most of the power, and brutually tried and guillotined. Attempted to Establish socialist system. |
| Thermidorian Reaction | The reaction/celebration of the fall of the Reign of Terror, and the beginning of the rule of the Directory. |
| The Directory | Government that took over after the Reign of Terror, tried to get back to the original ideals of the French Revolution. |
| First Coalition | Austria, Netherland (Belgium), and Prussia joined forces against France in 1792. Intially did well, but then fell apart. |
| Second Coalition | Austria and Great Britain joined together in 1798 against the French. Again, eventually fell apart. |
| Third Coalition | Put together to stop Napoleon. Included Austria, Russia, Sweden, and Britain. Collapsed after Napoleon scored a brilliant victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. |
| Fourth Coalition | Coalition to defeat Napoleon. Included Austria, Prussia, Russia, and Great Britain. Held together, defeat Napoleon and sent him to Elba, and then defeated him again, sending him to a prison island in the middle of nowhere. |
| Grand Empire | Established from Napoleon's conquests all over Europe. Three parts: France, separate kingdoms of France ruled by Napoleon's family members, and allies Austria, Prussia, and Russia. |
| The Grand Army | The powerful and highly successful army created by Napoleon. |
| Quadruple Alliance | What resulted of the successful 4th Coalition, an alliance between Austria, Prussia, Russia, and England. |
