| Authentication | The process by which the computer system validates a user's login. |
| Authorization | The process by which the user can associate specifi permissions to each user name. |
| Commands | An instruction you give to a computer that causes an action to be carried out. |
| Desktop | On-screen work area that uses menus and icons. |
| Folder | A container for programs and files in GUI interfaces. |
| Icon | Small image displayed on the screen to represent an object. |
| Menu | a list of options from which a user can select an option to perform and action. |
| Notification Area | Located on the right side of the taskbar. It displays time, volumn, and other icons that may be running on the computer. |
| Taskbar | A rectangular bar that is usually located at the bottom of your screen. You can use it to select a program running on your computer. |
| Wallpaper | A pattern or picture on the screen background that you can choose. |
| Window | In Windows XP and Windows Vista, a window is a rectangular area on the monitor that displays one program. |
| Copy | Text, images or files are moved from one location to another. You now have more than one. |
| Cut | Text, images or files are moved from one location to another. You still have only ONE! |
| File | An electronic document. It can be a Word (.doc) or speadsheet(.xls) or aMP3. |
| GUI | Grapical User Interface. It displays pictures and images that allow a computer user to interact with a computer. |
| Icon | A small image displayed on the screen to represent an object. |
