Unit 3 Properties of Operation

AB
Propertya rule or law of mathematics
Commutitive propert of Additionchanging the order of the addends does not change the sum EX: 2+(3+4)=(3+4)+2 or a+b=b+a
Commutative Property of Multiplicationchanging the order of the factors does not change the product EX: 2(3x4)=(3x4)2 or ab=ba or 2(3)=3(2)
Associative Property of AdditionRegrouping the addends does NOT change the sum 2+(3+4)=(2+3)+4 or (a+b)+c=a+(b+c)
Associative Property of Multiplicationregrouping the factors does NOT change the product EX: 2(3x4)=(2x3)4 or a(bc)=(ab)c
Distributive Propertythe property of a number and the sum of two other numbers equals the sum (or difference) of the products of the number and each other number EX: 6(a+3)=(6xa)+(6x3) or 5(3-7)=(5x3)-(5x7) or 3a+3b=3(a+b)
Additive Identity PropertyThe sum of any real number and zero is equal to the given real number EX: a+0=a or 0+0.23=0.23
Multiplicative Identity PropertyThe product of any real number and one is equal to the given real number EX: 1xc=c or 0.93x1=0.93
Additive Inverse PropertyThe sum of a number and its additive inverse always equals zero EX: 8+(-8)=0 or (-0.25)+0.25=0
Multiplicative Inverse PropertyThe product of a number and its multiplicative inverse always equals one EX: 4x 1/4=1 or 3/4x4/3=1
Multiplicative Property of ZeroThe product of any real number and zero is zero EX: (3+5)0=0 or 654x0=0
