14 years after Lavoisier's death, Humphry Davy (1778-1829) using an electric current, divided lime into oxygen and a new element called "calcium". He also split magnesia into oxygen and a new element he named "magnesium".Perhaps best remembered for his discoveries of several alkali and alaline earth metals., as well as, contributions to the discoveries of the elemental nature of chlorine and iodine. In 1815 he invented the Davy lamp which allowed miners to work safely in the presence of flammable gases.
Chlorine is a green gas.The Greek work for "green" is "chlorine".
John Dalton (1766-1844) in 1804 proposed the existence of atoms and attributed certain properties to the atom.one substance could be converted into another by rearranging the atoms.
