Chemicals of Life vocabulary

Use these activities to improve your understanding for the vocabulary used in this unit.

AB
atomsmallest/basic unit of life.
elementSubstance composed of identical atoms like Carbon, Oxygen...
molecule2 or more of the same atoms/elements bonded together.
compound2 or more of the different elements bonded together.
cohesionProperty of water that water is attracted to other molecules of water.
surface tensionProperty of cohesion
adhesionWater is attracted to other materials.
capillary actionProperty of adhesion and shows how water can move up other materials.
mixture2 or more substances mixed together but not chemically combined (can be seperated)
solutionwell mixed, mixture like salt-water
Ph scaleA scale that measures whether something is an acid, base, or neutral.
acidA lot of H+ ions
baseA lot of OH- ions
covalent bondTwo things bond togehter and share electrons
ionic bondsWhen things bond together and take electons
non-polar moleculesMolecules that do not have a charge.
polar moleculesMolecules that have a charge.
organicliving things- always will contain carbon.
monomerSimplest form of the organic compound.
polymersMonomers linked together to make bigger chains of the organic compound
organic compoundCarbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Always contain a combination of C,N,H, and O.
carboyhdratesThe monomer is a monosaccharide.
monosaccharideThe monomer for a carbohydrate.
disaccharideTwo monosaccharides put together. (Glucose+ fructose=sucrose)
isomeresglucose, fructose and galactose are all examples because they are made of the same elements (C6H12O6)
dehydration synthesisWhen monomers are added together, they go through this and lose a water molecule.
hydrolysisWhen a polymer is broken apart, it goes through this and a water molecule is added.
lipidsfatty acids are the monomers and can be recognized by longn chains of hydrogen bonds.
hydrophilicwater loving
hydrophobicwater hating
triglycerideA lipid made of one glycerol and 3 fatty acids.
saturated fatBad fat that is solid and comes from animals/animal products
unsaturated fatliquid and comes from plants. The better fat.
cholesterolA type of lipid that is found in our cell membranes and hormones.
polysaccharidelong chains of monosaccharides. The most complex carbohydrates.
