What is the Magna Carta?It limited the power of the British monarch (king/queen)
2. How did the Magna Carta limit the rights of the King of England? ExplainIt created “Parliament”-(the law making body) & the king had to ask Parliament for permission to pay for wars and finance the royal government. The king did not have absolute or total control of the country.
3. How did the Magna Carta influence the creation of the American government?Parliament, the assemblies that developed in the colonies also controlled their funds, so they had some control over colonial governors.
4. What is the English Bill of Rights?The English Bill of Rights outlined rights of the English people. (ex. Parliament can’t tax without the people’s consent)
5. How did the English Bill of Rights influence the creation of the American government?Many Americans believed that the Constitution needed a Bill of Rights too.
6. What does a Bill of Rights protect people from?It protected them from a government that could abuse its powers. It guaranteed people certain freedoms and legal protections to the state’s citizens.
7. What did the Mayflower Compact do?After the Pilgrims arrived to the new world, they decided to create a plan for their government. The compact set up a direct democracy in which all men would vote and the majority would rule. It established a tradition of direct democracy.
8. What is the Enlightenment and how did it influence American Government?It was a movement of the 1700s that promoted knowledge, reason, and science to improve society. Framers of the Constitution got many ideas on the nature of people and government from Enlightenment thinkers.

10. How did John Locke’s ideas of natural rights influence the writing of the constitution?He believed that all people have natural rights & these rights include life, liberty, and property. Many Americans believed these rights to be those outlined in the Magna Carta & the English Bill of Rights.

14. What are the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation?Congress has not power to tax, no power to enforce its laws, no executive branch, 9 states had to approve any law before it could be passed, couldn’t force the states to meet military quotas.
16. Explain the dispute over New OrleansWesterners wanted the Right of Deposit at New Orleans-permission to put goods ashore for transfer to ocean going ships. Spain refused so westerners asked government to sign treaty with Spain that would allow them to trade freely along the Mississippi.
18. Why is the Mississippi River so important to trade?Bulky goods from the West like lumber, grain, deerskins etc. couldn’t be carried over the mountains so had to float down the Ohio and Mississippi River.

(all men are created equal and government is created to secure those rights)To keep power in hands of people-state legislators were popularly elected, most states allowed males 21 years old and older to vote, most state constitutions included a bill of rights guaranteeing certain freedoms.

22. In what ways was the Northwest Ordinance revolutionary compared to the way every other country colonized the world?It provided a democratic model for national expansionism. When a territory reached a population of 60,000-it could petition for statehood. Once admitted it would have the same rights and privileges as the original 13 states.
24. Can you describe who Daniel Shays was and why he was protesting?Daniel Shay was a former Continental Army captain. He was protesting the practice of taking farmers lands and putting them in jail for not paying their debts.
