| far flung lands | nations or areas that a good distance from you (many hours) and they are spread out (often a group of islands) |
| filibuster | to try to stop a bill from becoming a law by a senator/Congressman taking the floor and talking so long that others can't even vote on the bill |

| foreign entanglements | 1 nation becoming involved with other countries problems that a good distance away - the US getting involved in World War I, because we had a lot in common with England |
| foreign policy | how a nation gets along with another nation/country |
| frontier mentality | surviving on your own, practical, adventurous |
| genocide | deliberately killing off of, or wiping out of a race or group of people |
| global shipping | to be able to send things anyplace in the world - sometimes has to do with imports & exports |
| heritage | your past - what you got from your ancestors/grandparents/ or the people in a country got from those who were there before them |
| heroism | to do something real good, to save someone |
| hostilities | war, violence |
| humanitarian | to help out other people; "clue" think of a word that means the same thing as "person" - it will be the first part of this term |
| humiliate | to make fun of |
| imperialism | when 1 country takes over an area |
| intervene intervention | to get in the middle of, to try & stop something or settle something |
| invest | to spend on something with the idea of making more money than you put in |
| isthmus | a narrow strip of land separating 2 bodies of water - Panama |
| Japan | a highly industrial nation located on a set of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean |
| lease | to rent - usually a long-term agreement |
| lock | can mean 1 of 2 things - something that keeps people out of something ... like a room, or safe, .. or something that separates 2 groups/sections of water .. one which may be deeper than the other |
| malaria | a disease you get from mosquitos |
| markets | a place where things are bought & sold |
| mercantilism | economic imperialism - the mother country uses a colony to get rich... the colony unfortunately gets poorer |
| Mexico | a nation which borders on th U.S. south; Texas, New Mexico, the U.S. went to war against this nation over Texas |
| militarily | have to do with soldiers, sailors, fighting men |
| militarism | doing things strict & in order, with precision, straight, not fooling around |
| missionaries | religious people, usually Christians - they try to spread God's word & the life & teachings of Jesus Christ |
