Maximilian | Guy Napoleon III briefly placed on the Mexican throne until the US government threatened to use force against France. France abandons the idea and Maximilian was executed. |
Secession | When a state leaves the Union. Confederate states leave the union based on the idea of state's rights over that of federal authority. Shot their own foot because this meant that Confederacy would never be a unified or strong if any state could leave or not obey a central authority. |
Jefferson Davis | President of the Confederacy. Did not follow public opinion and weakened as a leader due to the fact that he was leading a bunch of states who didn't believe in a central authority. |

A personal liberty that states that an individual cannot be taken from their home without a fair hearing in court and a chance to defend themself. Trent Affair | Almost sent the US and England to war duing the Civil War. A union commander took two Confederates off the British ship, the Trent creating an international incident. England mad that the US removed the 2 and the US mad that England was transporting 2 Confederates! |
Abraham Lincoln | Fair minded but suspended habeus corpus during the war. No military background but knew a bad general when he saw one. Had less trouble governing that Jefferson Davis because the US government was almost 100 years old. Davis on the other hand, was cobbling together a brand new, not unified government on a shoestring. |
