acetabulum | The cup-shaped cavity at the base of the hipbone into which the ball-shaped head of the femur fits. Also called cotyloid cavity |
acromion | The outer end of the scapula, extending over the shoulder joint and forming the highest point of the shoulder, to which the collarbone is attached. Also called acromial process. |
appendicular skeleton | The bones of the limbs, including the bones of the pectoral and pelvic girdles. |
articulations (joints) | The place of anatomical union, usually movable, between two or more bones. |
atlas | The top or first cervical vertebra of the neck, supporting the skull and articulating with the occipital bone and rotating around the dens of the axis. |
axis | The second cervical vertebra. Also called epistropheus, vertebra dentata. |
axial skeleton | The bones of the head and trunk, excluding the pectoral and pelvic girdles. |
ball-and-socket joint | A multiaxial joint in which a sphere on the head of one bone fits into a rounded cavity in the other bone, as in the hip joint. Also called cotyloid joint, enarthrosis. |

diaphysis | the portion of a long bone between the ends or extremities, which is usually articular, and wider than the shaft; it consists of a tube of compact bone, enclosing the medullary cavity. epiphysis | The end of a long bone that is originally separated from the main bone by a layer of cartilage but that later becomes united to the main bone through ossification. |
