Roles in the Operating Room

| Nurse anesthetist (CRNA) | A registered nurse who administers anesthesia. differing in scope from the anesthesiologist. |
| Cirulating nurse | An RN who advocates for the patient at all times, is not sterile or scrubbed in, and documents the procedure. |
| Surgical technologist | A graduate of a surgical tech program, is sterile, remains in the sterile field, hands instruments to the surgeon. |
| Surgeon | Performs the surgical procedure, provides for the patient safety and management. |
| Registered Nurse First Assistant | Assists the surgeon with the surgery, is scrubbed and sterile, sutures, and uses instruments. |
| Anesthesiologist | A medical doctor who provides anesthesia. |
| Scrub nurse | An RN who is sterile, remains in the sterile field, hands instruments to the surgeon. |
| Surgeon's assistant | Can be a physician, physician's assistant or RNFA who assists the surgeon during the procedure with holding retractors, suturing and assisting with hemostasis. |
