| dogma | the most essential church teaching |
| infallibility | when the pope, together with the bishops, speak on matters of faith and morals they are free or error |
| ecumenical council | a gathering of all Catholic bishops in the world. They gather to determine those things all the local churches will hold in common. |
| excommunication | The most severe penalty within the church. A person who is excommunicated is separated from other Catholics and may not receive Communion or hold positions in the church. |
| bishop | successor to the apostles; "overseer" of local church |
| college of bishops | refers to the bishops as a group |
| magisterium | the pope and bishops in their teaching role |
| hierarchy | the structural order of leaders within the church; the pope, bishops, priests and deacons |
