Korean War | Where US and NATO troops fought North Korean and Chinese troops when they crossed the 38th parallel into South Korea in a bid to turn South Korea into a communist nation. South Korea had been winning UNTIL Chinese troops helped the North Koreans. |
NATO | North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A group of western nations that agreed to help each other from Soviet attacks. Included the US, England, Canada, France, and others. |
Warsaw Pact | Formed by the Soviet Union after they found out about NATO. In the Pact, alliances were made by the Soviet Union and her satellite nations she controlled. |
China | Turned communist in the 1930's after a brutal civil war. |
Mao Zedong | Chinese communist leader who led millions of Chinese peasants against nationalist, Chiang Kai Shek. |
Chiang Kai Shek | Nationalist Chinese leader who wanted a free, democratic China. He was given millions by the US to fight Mao Zedong but he lost and fled to Taiwan, an island off of the Chinese mainland. |
General Douglas MacArthur | Led US and NATO troops to push back the invasion of South Korea by North Korean and Chinese communists. He was fired when he did insisted that US troops should blockade and bomb China. Truman did not agree and though invading China would be a huge mistake. MacArthur called Truman a coward. |
HUAC | House of Un-American Activities Committee. This organization believed that communists were everywhere in the US. Led by Senator Joseph McCarthy. |
McCarthyism | Named after the communist hunter, Joseph McCarthy. This term is used when someone is making unsupported accusations. |
nuclear race | The race between the US and the Soviets to build more nukes than each other. Once the Soviets denoted their own atomic bomb, the US immediately began developing the technology for the HYDROGEN bomb. |
Alger Hiss | American accused of spying for the Soviet Union and was found guilty of perjury or lying on the witness stand about his activities. |
U-2 Incident | Occurred when American pilot, Gary Powers, was shot down over the Soviet Union and captured. Powers admitted to the Soviets that he was spying. The incident created years of tension between the US and the Soviet Union and Powers spent 21 months out of a ten year prison sentence. |
Berlin Blockade | Stalin blockaded the city of Berlin after Western powers attempted to reunify Germany. Stalin had hoped to starve the people of West Berlin. |
Berlin Airlift | The solution to Stalin's blockade of Berlin. US and British planes flew into Berlin every three minutes for 366 days dropping off food and supplies until Stalin gave up and allowed trains and trucks back into the city. |
