| Allusion | A figure of speech where the speaker/narrator refers to another (usually famous) person, place, or work of art. |
| Anecdote | A short and amusing story about a real incident or person |
| Flashback | A scene that takes a story back in time from the story’s current events |
| Dialect | Use of words or phrases that are limited to a certain area |
| Foreshadow | An intentional hint in a story of events to come; a prediction |
| Iambic Pentameter | A pattern in poetry where each line has ten syllables that alternate unstressed and stressed beats |
| Motif | A recurring theme, idea, concept, or element in a literary work |
| Speaker | The person, place, object, or idea that is telling the events that occur in a poem |
