anaphorarepetition of words or phrases for emphasis
apostrophethe direct address of a person, place or thing as present when absent, usually for emotional effect
aposiopesisa breaking off suddenly in the middle of speaking, usually to portray being overcome with emotion
asyndetonthe absence of connectives between words, clauses, phrases; the omission of conjunctions where one or more would ordinarily be expected in a series of words or phrases to underscore or emphasize the words in the series
chiasmusan arrangement of words which, when written as separate lines, form the pattern ABBA, often to emphasize some contrast or to create a word-picture
ecphrasisa vivid description; using details to place an object, person, or event before the listener's eyes; also a literary description of a work of art
