Affirmative IndustriesThese are businesses owned by an agency assisting people with disabilities. The agency employs its clients to work in these businesses. Contracts are obtained with area businesses. Clients working in this environment have good work experience with needed support but have few choices in their job.
Principles important to successful mediationAtmosphere should be cooperative; approach should be positive and focus on future improvement or success; Outcomes should emphasize that there are no winners or losers; The entire process should be voluntary in nature to foster acceptance for outcomes and any party can leave mediation at any time; Process should have complete honesty and openness; should be completely impartial and remain neutral; assurances and adherence to confidentiality is vital and should offer creative and original solutions.

PAIMI handles issues such a as forced medication, lawsuits, treatment such as seclusion. Additionally, legal advice and assistance. Usually represent those in hospitals or incarcerated individuals.
ADA protection in employmentProhibits discrimination by employers based on disability. Law covers all aspects of employment. If individual requires accommodations, it must be provided. Reasonable means that the cost is not excessive in comparison with the business production and does not interfere with necessary business practices. Violations of rights under this law can be remedied by filling a complaint with initiates investigation and possible legal action.
Shelter Plus Care ProgramIntended to help homeless mentally ill persons find permanent shelter through special rental programs with llds or agencies. Funds can be used to support programs such as tenant base rental programs or sponsor based rentals which is partnership between the helping agencies and local housing authorities.
Independent Living MovementMovement which increases ability to live independently and become advocates of their own rights. Based on the belief that its external obstacles such as physical impediments and people attitudes that prevent independent living not disabilities. The movement also emphasizes the importance of individual choice even the right to make risky or ill advised decisions. Prevailing belief is that most disabled individuals can take care of themselves with training and support. Movement has led to the creation of independent living centers or resource organizations. Peer run centers providing training, socialization, support.
Four Areas the SSA considers in psychiatric disability1. Activities of daily living such as paying bills, hygiene, cooking and cleaning. 2. Social Functioning and interaction such as relationships with friends and family. 3. Person's ability to concentrate, self pace and maintain stamina in completing a job for an extended period of time, (6-8 hours). 4. Person's level of acceptance or tolerance for competitive work environment. Considers if a person potential disability limits ability to compete in the job market. Disability must be present without interruption for 1 year.
Core Principles of NegotiationCome prepared; non personal; emotions under control; confine conversations; cannot be unilateral; never reduce an offer before receiving counteroffer; never make final offer first; have other options in case need to walk away; seek expert help when needed; do not over estimated the other party; do not rush.
Community Development Block Grant Programdesigned to provide housing options , improve quality of life, and increase opportunity for individuals in low income brackets. Community must provide 70% of funding to the 30% provided by HUD; Is broad in activities including support other than just housing itself.
Supportive Housing ProgramPrimarily designed to assist homeless people finding housing and receiving the needed services to keep the housing. Also support Safe Haven services which offer highly supported living environments with communal kitchen and baths. Provides gateway to permanent housing.
