| US INDEPENDENCE | The US was originally 13 British colonies They had no representation in government decisions They were being forced to pay taxes to pay for the war between France and England. | THE BILL OF RIGHTS | The Bill of Rights is the collective name for the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution. These limitations serve to protect the natural rights of liberty and property. |
| THE TREATY OF PARIS | signed on September 3, 1783, ended the American Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the United States of America. |
| WHY THE BILL OF RIGHTS? | This helps all citizens, including minorities, to be protected and that no authority in government take advantage of their power to take away the liberties of the people. This is the basis of why the United States was founded. |
| EXAMPLES OF RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS | speech, you can say anything you want ; press, you can write anything you want; religion, you can be a part of any church; assembly, you can meet with anyone; the right to a fair trial, the right to a trial by jury, the right not to be searched without a warrant, the right not to have to use your home for the military |

| REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY | The US is considered a representative democracy because the people elect the leaders who will represent them in government and make decisions/ laws in the best interest, for the common good of all. |
| CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY | US constitution explains the rights of the citizens, the funtions and responsibilities of government. Citizens have the right to elect the people who will be representing them in government |

| EXECUTIVE | responsible for enforcing the laws of the land. The president, vice president, department heads (cabinet members), and heads of independent agencies carry out this mission. |
