| possessive noun | shows that it belongs to someone; Bob's coat, Julie's dress |
| possessive pronoun | his, hers, theirs, ours, mine |
| sensory images | describes what we see, hear, feel, smell, or taste |
| alliteration | sentences that contain lots of words beginning with the same first letter; John jumped jelly beans in July. |
| simile | a comparison using "like" or "as" |
| metaphor | a comparison without "like" or "as" |
| idiom | a phrase like "let the cat out of the bag" that can't be taken literally |
| onomatopoeia | a sound |
| personification | treating an animal or other object like it was a person; make them speak, dance, dress, etc. |
| hyperbole | an exageration that is funny; If you were any smaller you would need a particle microscope just to see you. |
| plural noun | more than one; has an S on the end of it |
| singular noun | just one |
| subject | the first noun in a sentence |
| predicate | the first verb in the sentence |
| simple subject | first noun |
| simple predicate | first verb |
| complete subject | all words that are connected to the first noun; THE WILD CHERRIES are very tasty. |
| complete predicate | the words that are connected to the verb; The wild cherries TASTE JUICY. |
| compound subject | more than one subject connected by AND, OR, NOR.... |
| compound predicate | more than one verb connected by AND, OR, NOR.. |
| compound sentence | Two sentence that are connected by AND, OR, BUT, NOR |
| simple sentence | A sentence with a noun and verb in it. |
| complex sentence | a long sentence that contains a complete sentence plus an extra clause that can't make a sentence by itself. |
| almanac | A book of facts about one particular year like 2011 or 2012 |

| encyclopedia | gives a lot of information about one topic; if you were doing a research paper this would be a good source |
| dictionary | gives definitions, parts of speech, and syllables |
| appendices | extra materials at the end of the book like tables, charts, or graphs |
| preface | an introduction to the book by the author |
| incomplete sentence or fragment | It is a sentence that is missing the beginning or the end. When you read it you feel like you missed part of the conversation. |
| declarative | a statement of information |
| imperative | request or command without a noun at the beginning of the sentence |
| exclamatory | excited!!!! |

| homophones | their, there, they're, to, too, two, deer, dear, |
| antonyms | words with opposite meanings |
| synonyms | words with the same meanings |
| syllables | a vowel in every syllable |

| transition words | words that put sentences in their correct order; then, next, first, after, before, last, finally |
