FLASH CARDS & MORE - LAND BIOMES - 6TH GRADE

Information from the notes for the sixth grade test on land biomes from the lessons in chapter 17.

AB
The tropical zone contains what biomes? The zone that includes these biomes: tropical rain forests, tropical deserts, & tropical savannas.
The nickname of the tropical zone of Earth. The "Tropics" is the nickname for this zone.
What a tropical rain forest is like.Warm, wet, lush vegetation, lots of biodiversity (different types of animals and plants) is what this biome is like.
The seasons of a tropical rainforest...these seasons don't change much in this biome - they stay fairly hot & humid all year long.
Animals found in a tropical rainforest...Tree frogs, leopards, monkeys, & parrots are found in this biome.
Plants found in a tropical rainforest include...Mahogany, ferns, & bamboo are found in this biome.
Surprising fact about tropical rainforest soilvery thin and poor soil is found in this warm, wet, equator-located biome.
2 reasons for infertile tropical rainforest soil1- Massive number of plants/trees absorb most of the soil's nutrients and 2-Any remaining nutrients get washed away by heavy rains are the reasons for this.
Another name for a tropical savannaGrasslands are another name for this biome.
What a tropical savanna is like...Has tall grasses, a few scattered trees, and very warm is what this biome is like.
Describe the weather in a tropical savanna.Dry seasons followed by short periods of rain & very warm.
The continent that's usually associated with tropical savannasAfrica is the continent that is usually associated with this biome.
Grass fires are very common in this biome.Tropical savannas usually have these during the dry seasons and they are the main reason for the nutrients in the soil here.
2 ways plants have adapted to fire in the tropical savannasIn this biome some plants need fire for: 1- opening their seeds and 2- triggering the plants to drop their seeds.
Animals found in the tropical savannaCrocodiles, elephants, giraffes, and lions are often found in this biome.
Plants found in the tropical savannaThorny shrubs, a few scattered trees, and tall grasses are found in this biome.
Low rainfall amounts are the reason tropical deserts arethe driest places on earth are included in this biome.
Animals found in tropical desertsScorpions, rats, lizards, & snakes are found in this biome.
The zone & biome we live in (in AL)Temperate zone & temperate forest
The biomes in the temperate zoneTemperate forest, temperate grassland, temperate desert, & chaparrel are found in this zone.
Regular seasonal changes with cold winters and warm summers are found in this biomeTemperate forests have these kinds of seasons.
Found in the temperate forest biome, Trees that lose their leaves in the fall are calledDeciduous trees are found in this biome.
Why temperate forests have fertile soilDeciduous trees drop their leaves and these leaves then decay, causing this trait of the temperate forests.
Animals found in temperate grasslandsBison in North America and kangaroos in Australia are animals found in this biome.
The biome with the most fertile soilTemperate grasslands are known for tall grasses and this type of soil.
The reason for the large decrease in the amount of temperate grasslands on Earth.Fertile soil has caused much of this biome's land to be cleared for growing crops.
Animals found in chaparralsMountain lions and coyotes live in this biome.
Evergreen shrubs that are short and have thick, waxy leaves are found in this biome. This type of vegetation is found in the chaparral biome.
The adaptations made by the vegetation in the chaparral biomeThick waxy leaves to hold onto water better in the very dry climate of this biome.
The climate of a temperate desertCold deserts (especially at night) and sometimes very hot in the day with little rainfall is the climate of this biome
Animals found in temperate desertsBats, toads, snakes, lizards are all found in this (often cool), dry biome.
This desert biome often receives light snow in the winter.Temperate deserts often get this type of weather in the winter.
The zone found around the North and South Poles and containing the taiga and tundra biomes. The polar zone is found in these parts of the world and include 2 biomes.
This biome's winters and summers see periods of 24-hour daylight alternating with 24-hour darkness. The tundra biome experience these unsual daytime/nighttime conditions at certain points of the year.
The frozen layer of soil found in the tundraPermafrost is this trait found in this biome.
Permafrost is the reason this biome is so muddy. The tundra doesn't drain well because of this trait and it causes the ground to form this condition.
Permafrost + mud = what kind of condition (in relation to living organisms)These two things together in the tundra create great conditions for insects to breed in and this causes birds to migrate here to feed on them.
Animals that live in the tundraCaribou, reindeer, & polar bears live in this biome.
Plants found in the tundraMosses and lichens are found in this cold, muddy biome.
The Northern Coniferous Forests are also known as this biomeThe tiaga is also known as this biome.
Animals found in the taigaBears, moose, and rabbits are often found in this cold biome.
These types of trees are plentiful in the taigaConifers or coniferous trees are found in this biome.
Needle-like leaves and production of cones are two characteristics of this type of tree commonly found in the taiga.Conifers or coniferous trees have these traits and are found in this biome.
The reason most forest floors are bare in the taiga. The conifer trees' needle-like leaves transfer acids to the forest floor when they are shed and this causes this common trait of taiga's forest floors.
Examples of conifer treesPine, spruce, and fir trees are all this type of tree.
The definition of a microclimate. The climate of a small area is the definition of this.
Where alpine biomes (a microclimate) are found. The cold biome microclimate that is found on mountaintops all over the world.
2 reasons why the temperatures of a city (a microclimate) are warmer than the surrounding rural areas1-Lack of vegetation and 2- Large amounts of dark materials which do not reflect well are the causes of this in this type of microclimate.
Fales are this type of adaptation to tropical rainforests. This is a human adaptation to this biome where their homes are basically a roof (for shade) with no walls (for breezes).
