Second Great Awakening,  | Religious reform movement that said people could go to heaven by doing good things. It helped cause social reform in the North. |
Hospital and Prison Reform,  | Movement led by Dorthea Dix that called for the improvement of hospitals and prisons |
Debtor,  | Somebody who owes money and cannot pay it back. Before reform they were put in prison. |
Temperance movement,  | Reform movement that tried to stop alcohol abuse. |
Improving Education,  | Movement led by Terrance Mann that called for mandatory public education especially in the North |
American Colonization Society,  | Group formed by President Monroe to relocate freed slaves to Africa (Libera) |
Abolitionist,  | Movement to end slavery |
Frederick Douglass,  | Former slave who educated himself, started the North Star, and called for the end of slavery. |
William Lloyd Garrison,  | Massachusetts abolitionist preacher that started the Liberator. |
The Grimke sisters,  | Daughters of a Southern plantation owner who hated slavery, moved to the North, and became abolitionists. |
The Liberator,  | An important abolitionist newspaper started by William Lloyd Garrison |
Underground Railroad,  | System of houses, barns, and hiding places used to help slaves escape the South. |
Harriet Tubman,  | "Conductor" on the Underground Railroad who helped many slaves escape from the South. |
Opposition to Abolition,  | People against ending slavery like Southerners, factory owners, poor workers, and immigrants. |
Seneca Falls Convention,  | Meeting that called for equal rights for women |
Women's Rights Movement,  | Movement to get equal rights for women that grew out of the Abolitionist Movement. |
