| Saratoga | Considered the turning point of the war for the Americans. After this the Patriots gained French support. |
| Loyalists | A group of people that wanted to stay with England which included royal officials as well as merchants and farmers. |
| Thomas Jefferson | Author of the Declaration of Independence. |
| Friedrich von Steuben | Prussian officer that helped train colonists how to march and to use bayonets. |
| Nathan Hale | Patriot that worked as a spy for George Washington. He said,"I regret that I only have one life to lose for my country." |
| John Paul Jones | American naval commander of the Bonhomme Richard which attacked the British warship the Serapis and won. |
| Thomas Paine | Author of the pamphlet Common Sense and the Crisis. |
| Richard Henry Lee | Patriot that offered the resolution that the colonies should declare their independence from England. |
| Mary Ludwig Hays | Also known as Molly Pitcher, helped load cannons at the Battle of Monmouth. |
| Charles Cornwallis | British general that was forced to surrender at Yorktown after being surrounded and cut off at sea by the French. |
| Benjamin Franklin | Patriot that served as ambassador to France and convinced them to help the Patriots after the Battle of Saratoga. |
| Thaddeus Kosciusko | A Polish engineer that helped to build forts and other defenses for the Americans. |
| American advantages | Leadership of George Washington, defending their own land, and most Patriots owned rifles and were good shots. |
| Declaration of Independence | States that everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Document calling for the colonies to become their own country. |
| Native Americans | Some fought with the British and some with the Patriots even though most tried to stay neutral. |
| African Americans | Supported the Revolution because they believed that it would bring an end to slavery. Washington allowed them to serve in the army because the British were recruiting slaves. |
| Francis Marion | Known as the Swamp Fox, because he would perform hit and run attacks and then disappear into the swamp again. |
| Treaty of Paris 1783 | Americans agreed to ask state legislatures to pay Loyalists for property that they lost. |
