Reciprocitya treaty between the US and HI to level the playing field for HI sugar. Many MK apposed because of the terms (HI couldnt lease pearl harbor to any other nation) because they saw it as a taking of soverignty. reciprocity benefitted sugar growers by increasing revenues from 1.5m/ yr to 14m/yr and also was a detriment to land by increasing sugar acerage from 85acres to 87k acres in 20 years.

The Bayonet Constitution (of 1887),Constitution that was forced upon kalākaua after he refused the NEW reciprocity aggrement (to surrender pearl harbor) by the hawaiian league in 1887. The constitition striped the king of his executive powers. now the cabinet was the executive. the king could not fire the cab and the leg could dismiss the ministries. in orde rto take part in gov one had to pledge aligience to this new constitution.

Liliʻuokalanione of na lani eha. Became moʻi after her brother dies in 1891. Entered as the moʻI determined to create a new constitution at the request of her people. In doing so she was arrested for treason. Queen eventually steps down to protect from loss of life.
The Republicproclaimed on july 4th 1894. Was very careful as to who could participate/ who could vote. They elected 18 people who had taken the oath to participate in the framing of the constitution. The prov. Gov. appointed 19 members to draft an constitution that would look like a fair republic.
