| AI – Adobe Illustrator | It is the Industry standard that is used by developers of vector graphics. It is used to create, save, and archive original artwork. |
| Animation | It is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. |
| BMP - Bitmap | It is a type of image file format used to store digital images. The term comes from the computer programming terminology, meaning a spatially mapped array of bits. They are also called Raster images files. |
| CDR – Corel Draw | It is a vector graphics file format developed and marketed by Corel Corporation. |
| Color depth | The number of bits per pixel that can be displayed on a computer screen. The more bits per pixel, the more colors displayed and each bit is composed of 2 values: 0 and 1. |
| Compression | It refers to how an image is stored. The greater it is the lower the quality of the image. There are two types of this. |
| DXF | Is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk for enabling data interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs. |
| EPS – Encapsulated Postscript | It is a Meta format that can be used on raster or vector graphics. Graphics developers generally save a copy of the AI file in this format. It is the preferred format for vendors/clients who use the graphics in publications |
| GIF – Graphics Interchange Format | Is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability. |
| Graphics | Anything on the page that is not actual text, from simple line drawings to fully active images found on the World Wide Web. |
| JPEG – Joint Photographic Experts Group | It is a commonly used method of compression for photographic images. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. They typically achieve a 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality. |
| Lossless | This compression reduces the file size without losing any pixel information and the quality of the image is not compromised. |
| Lossy | This compression alters and/or eliminates some pixels. The more the image is reduced, the more the quality is degraded. |
| Meta graphics | These files are intended to be portable between applications and may contain both vector and raster/bitmap components. |
| PLT | It is a vector file format designed by Hewlett Packard for Graphics images. |
| PNG – Portable Network Graphics | It is a bitmap image format that employs lossless data compression and is typically used on the Internet. |
| Portability | It is how easily you can open, modify, and view the files using different operating systems, software, and browsers. |
| Raster graphics | They consist of grids of tiny dots called pixels and are also called bitmap graphics. They have a fixed resolution and cannot be resized without altering image quality and are edited in paint programs. |
| Render | When an object is delivered in its final form to the viewer. |
| SVG – Scalable Vector Graphics | It is a standard format created by W3C. It is a versatile all-purpose vector file format. |
| TIFF – Tagged Interleave Format | File format (large file sizes) used to store raw bitmap data by some programs and devices such as scanners and used in high resolution printing. Available in compressed and un-compressed formats; compressed is advised. |
| Transparency | This allows the background color of an image to be replaced or changed so that the graphic can blend into the background. |
| Vector graphics | These types of graphics are created from mathematical formulas that are used to define lines, curves, and nodes (drawing points). They can be edited in draw programs. They are resolution independent – regardless of how much the image is enlarged or reduced, the image definition and quality remain the same. |
| WMF | Is a graphics file format on Microsoft Windows systems, originally designed in the early 1990s. It is intended to be portable between applications and may contain both vector and bitmap components. |
