| A | B |
| Architectural Appearance Grade | An appearance grade that is intermediate between those of industrial and premium grade. |
| Blind nailing | To nail in such a way that nail heads are not visible on the face of the work. |
| Composite panel | A material or assembly made up of two or more materials bonded together to act as a single structural unit. |
| Exposure 1 | Panels that are meant for use in protected situations, that is, where the panels are to be covered with an exterior facing material. |
| Glue-laminated wood, glulam | Lengths of dimension lumber, glued and laminated together to create a structural member of a large cross section. |
| Hardboard | A product made from wood fibers and a resin binder under heat and pressure. It is denser than medium-density fiberboard (MDF). A very dense panel product, usually with at least one smooth face, made of highly compressed wood fibers. |
| Insulating fiberboard sheathing | A low-density panel, usually ½ or ¾ inch thick, made of wood or vegetable fibers and binders, and coated with asphalt for water resistance. |
| Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) | Structural composite lumber made up of thin wood veneers joined with glue. |
| Manufactured wood product | Any of a variety of wood products made by bonding smaller pieces of wood veneers, fibers, strands, wafers, or particles to produce a composite wood material. |
| Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) | A fine-grained wood fiber and resin panel product. |
| Medium-density overlay (MDO) | A medium-weight, resin-treated overlay applied to plywood panels to achieve a smoother, more durable face. |
| Nonveneered panel | Varying sized wood particles and strands (shreds) of wood that are compressed and glued into varying numbers of layers. Consist of oriented strandboard (OSB) and particle board panels. |
| Oriented strand board (OSB) | A building panel composed of long shreds of wood fiber oriented in specific directions and bonded together under pressure. A wood-based panel made by gluing several layers of wood strands under heat and pressure so that the adjacent layers are oriented in opposite directions. |
| Parallel chord truss | A truss used for floor where the top and bottom chords are parallel |
| Parallel strand lumber (PSL) | Manufactured wood product composed of narrow strands of veneered lumber glued together, all oriented in the same direction to form a member of large cross section. Structural composite lumber made of wood shreds oriented parallel to the long axis of each piece and bonded together with adhesive. |
| Particleboard | A building panel composed of small particles of wood bonded together under pressure. |
| Penny (d) | Specification for the size of nails in the United States. |
| Plastic lumber | Lumberlike products with a plastic content of 50 percent or more. |
| Plywood | A wood panel composed of an odd number of layers of wood veneer bonded together under pressure. |
| Premium Appearance Grade | A grade commonly specified where the appearance of the beam is important. |
| Sinker nails | Nails that have a thinner shank and coated with a resin for easy driving, used in framing. |
| Structural finger-jointed lumber | Short lengths of solid lumber scrap are finger jointed and glued end-to-end into longer lengths. |
| Structural wood panel | These products fall into three general categories; plywood (veneered) panels, composite panels, and nonveneered panels. |
| Structural-grade plastic lumber (SGPL) | Lumberlike plastic members, reinforced with glass fibers, and formulated to be roughly as strong as conventional solid wood. |
| Veneered panels | Consist of plywood panels. |
| Waferboard | A building panel made by bonding together large, flat flakes of wood. |
