Battles at Artemisium and Salamis

Battle of Artemisium, naval battle fought simultaneously with land battle of Thermopylae. The Greek allies did not defeat the Persians, nor prevent them from advancing further along the coast. Conversely, neither did the Persians destroy the Greek fleet, or irreparably weaken it. Thus, the battle was indecisive. Still, it was significant for the Greeks, as it proved they could stand up to Persian navy, it gave Greeks sailors and leaders valuable battle experience and it showed Greek leaders the Persian naval weaknesses

Battle of Salamis, fought between an alliance of Greek city-states and the Persian empire in September 480 BC, in the straits between the mainland and Salamis, an island near Athens. As a result of deception by Themistocles, the Persian navy sailed into the straits and tried to block both entrances to trap the Greeks. In the cramped quarters, the great Persian numbers were a weakness. Greeks scored a decisive victory, sinking or capturing 300 Persian ships
