Literary Terms
Literary devices are used by authors to make their writing interesting, complex and relevant. You should understand how they are used in a poem, story, article or novel.

| plot | The events of a story |
| setting | Place that a story occurs |
| point of view | Vantage point from which a story is told. May be 1st or 3rd person. |
| theme | Central message or moral of a story; central idea that the reader gains from the story |
| imagery | Words that give a mental picture to a reader |
| characterization | Development of the people in a story |
| conflict | Tension caused by unresolved events, ideas or emotions in a story |
| climax | Turning point in a story, where the action or conflict reaches its highest point |
| resolution | The final outcome of a story, after the conflict is resolved |
| exposition | Opening presentation of a story's elements; setup of the story |
