Adjectives--masculine and feminine singular
As you know, adjectives change their form depending on whether they describe a masculine or a feminine noun. This means that you have to know two things: *Is the noun masculine or feminine? (There's no easy way to know this; you need to memorize this.) *What are the masculine and feminine forms of various adjectives? Again, you have to memorize these. Adjectives whose masculine form ends in a consonant (all letters except a/e/i/o/u/y) have masculine and feminine forms. --intelligent = masculine --intelligente = feminine Adjectives whose masculine form ends in a silent e do not change to make the feminine: --sociable = masculine --sociable = feminine Examples of adjectives that have both masculine and feminine forms are: petit, grand, brun, blond, américain, français, amusant, patient, intelligent, intéressant. Examples of adjectives that do not add an 'e' to make the feminine (because there already is one) are: sympathique, timide, énergique, égoïste, dynamique, populaire, sociable, enthousiaste. Practice these making sure that you know which adjectives have two forms and which ones have only one form.
