| Disability | The United States Department of Education defines a disability as a condition, impairment, or developmental delay that impacts an individual’s cognitive, language, speech, visual, physical, or emotional development or abilities |
| Protective factors | The five factors that create healthy environments for all children. The five factors are parental resilience, social connections, concrete support in times of need, knowledge of parenting and child development, and children’s social and emotional competence (Center for the Study of Social Policy). |
| Voice | The sound humans make as air from the lungs is pushed between vocal folds in the larynx, causing them to vibrate |
| Speech | Talking, one way to express language. It involves the coordination of the muscle actions of the tongue, lips, jaw, and vocal tract to produce the recognizable sounds that make up language. |
| Language | Set of shared rules that allow people to express their ideas in a meaningful way. Language may be expressed verbally or by writing, signing, or making other gestures, such as eye blinking or mouth movements. |
| Partially sighted | Indicates some type of visual problem that creates a need for special education |
| Low vision | Refers to a severe visual impairment that cannot be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses |
| Legally blind | Indicates that a person has less than 20/200 vision in the better eye or a very limited field of vision (20 degrees at its widest point) |
| Totally blind | Requires that children learn via Braille or other non-visual media |
