Fraction Vocabulary
The following vocabulary words are important for you to understand in order to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. HAVE FUN!

| Fraction | A number that names a part of a set that has a numerator and a denominator: 1/3, 1/2, 4/9... |
| Equivalent fractions | Fractions that name the same amount or are of equal value: 3/4, 6/8, 12/16, 75/100 |
| Simplest Form | A fraction is in simplest form when the numerator and the denominator have no common factor other than 1: 75/100 --> 3/4; 16/20 --> 4/5 |
| Like fractions | Fractions that have the same denominator and can be added or subtracted easily: 3/16 + 4/16; 5/8 - 2/8 |
| Improper fraction | When the numerator is larger than the denominator: 12/10; 8/5; 6/3 |
| Proper fraction | Numerator is smaller than the denominator: 1/2; 2/5; 3/7; 37/100 |
| Mixed Number | A whole number and a fraction: 1 2/3; 3 7/8; 10 1/2 |
| Unlike fractions | Fractions that DO NOT have the same denominator and cannot be added or subtracted: 3/16 + 2/8; 4/5 - 7/9 |
| One whole | Any time the numerator and the denominator are the same and equal "1": 2/2; 3/3; 5/5; 99/99... |
