Unit 10 - Intro to Digital File Prep and Output (IGC 2012/13)

AB
Digital file preparation and outputIs the process dedicated to the preparation of materials for output to imagesetters, large-format printers, platesetters, or other Postscript-type devices at a print shop or print provider.
Operating systemSoftware used to tell computer how to manipulate information and run various programs
IllustrationSoftware used to create vector graphics (Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw)
Raster imaging (Image editing)—Software used to manipulate a graphic image or photograph (Adobe Photoshop, MS Paint, GIMP)
Page layout—Software used to arrange and manipulate text and graphics (Adobe InDesign, QuarkXpress)
Font managementUsed to handle all of the fonts on a computer
PreflightUsed to check page layout files for potential output problems
ImpositionUsed to assist in arranging the pages of a print product on the printer’s sheet
Digital Camera ResolutionThe number of pixels per inch in an image; also refers to an image’s clarity and fineness of detail
MegapixelsHow large a photo can be printed in high resolution is determined by the number of megapixels a digital camera can shoot
Optical ZoomMeasures how far the zoom will work before it automatically turns photos blurry
ResolutionThe density of dots or pixels on a page or monitor usually measured in dots per inch (dpi) or pixels per inch (ppi)
ScannerA digitizing device that converts art or photos into an electronic bitmap form
Folding DummyA set of folded sheets showing the placement of pages and elements within a printed piece to ensure that items are placed in their proper positions; it may be either rough or comprehensive, depending on the client’s needs
PDF (Portable Document Format)Portable Is a standard format for for file sharing and Can be opened using Acrobat Reader independent of platform (Mac or PC)
GrayscaleA raster image (8-bit) where each dot on the screen can register up to 256 shades of gray, creating the illusion of a continuous tone image
Line artA drawing that contains no grays or middle tones (600 ppi is optimal resolution for scanning line art.)
RGBColor mode consisting of the additive primary colors (red, green, and blue) that create white when combined
Raster imageImage that has been scanned, taken with a digital camera, or created in a raster imaging program. Images are made up of pixels and are resolution dependent
Vector graphicImage made up of independent lines, shapes, or objects that are each defined by mathematical formulas that are NOT resolution dependent
