Overview of the Body Systems
|
| A | B |
| Skin | The skin is the outer protective layer of the body. It protects the interior from dehydration, microorganisms, abrasion, and radiation, as well as serving sensory and metabolic functions |
| Skeletal System | The skeletal system comprises the bones and cartilages of the body. It provides rigidity to the body and support for soft internal organs, as well as attachments for skeletal muscles, reservoirs for calcium and fat storage, and a site for blood cell production. |
| Nervous System | The nervous system processes information about the environment and the body's interior, and initiates movement of the limbs or changes in the body. It comprises the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and ganglia. |
| Circulatory System | the circulatory system consists of the heart to pump blood and the blood vessels to carry it. |
| Lymphatic System | The lymphatic system comprises a series of delicate channels which drain fluid through lymph nodes. It contains lymphocytes and macrophages to sweep up foreign proteins, microbes, and cancer cells. |
| Muscular System | The muscular system, which brings about body movement, includes the voluntary muscles of the body. Muscle fiber attach either directly to a bone, or to a tendon that is fixed to a bone. |
| Digestive System | Concerned with the ingestion, digestion, and absorption of food and water, and the excretion of residual waste, the digestive system extends from the mouth to the anus and has associated glands. |
| Endocrine System | The endocrine system is made up of a series of glands which maintain homeostasis. It includes the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, and endocrine pancreas glands. |
| Respiratory System | Comprising the nose, larynx, airways, and lungs, the respiratory system is concerned primarily with bringing air into the body for exchange between the air sacs and the blood. |
| Urinary System | The kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra make up the urinary system, which is primarily concerned with excretion of nitrogenous waste (urea in urine), but it is also important for control of the pH and ionic concentrations in the blood. |
| Reproductive System | The male and female reproductive systems are concerned with the production and nurturing of the next generation. They include the gonads, which produce sex cells, as well as associated glands, erectile tissues, the uterus, and breasts. |
