horizon line, A level line where water or land seems to end and the sky begins.
foreground, foreground - The area of a picture or field of vision, often at the bottom, that appears to be closest to the viewer. Also, to give priority to one aspect of a thing over another.
middleground, The part of an artwork that lies between the foreground (nearest to the viewer) and the background.
background, The part of a picture or scene that appears to be farthest away from the viewer, usually nearest the horizon. This is the opposite of the foreground. Between background and foreground is the middle ground.
sizeone of the perspective tools an artist can use to create an illusion of depth on a two-dimensional surface, in that the nearer an object is the larger it appears to be, and the farther it is the smaller it appears to be.
placementObjects placed closer to the horizon line appear to be farther away from the viewer, and objects placed further from the horizon line or closer to the bottom of the picture plane appear to be closer to the viewer.
overlappingWhen one thing lies over, partly covering something else. Depicting this is one of the most important means of conveying an illusion of depth.
detailsObjects that are more detailed and have brighter colors appear to be closer to the viewer and objects with fuzzy or unclear details and faded color appear to be further away from the viewer.
horizontalStraight and flat across, parallel to the horizon.
verticalThe direction going straight up and down; the opposite of (or perpendicular to) horizontal.
illusionA deceptive or misleading image or idea.
depthThe third dimension. The apparent distance from front to back or near to far in an artwork.
perspective drawingThe technique artists use to project an illusion of the three-dimensional world onto a two-dimensional surface. Perspective helps to create a sense of depth — of receding space.
vanishing pointIn linear perspective, a position on a horizon where lines or rays between near and distant places appear to converge (come together).
atmospheric perspectiveTechnique used in landscape art to give the impression of depth.
