Communication.is the clear exchange of ideas and information.Each day you communicate with people.
Relationship.is a connection you have with another person or group.It helps people understand each other and get along.
Different ways to Communicate.The main way people communicate is through language.On one end there is a speaker or writer.On the other end,is a listener or reader.
Body language.refers to facial expresions,eye contact,gestures,and posture.One way to demonstrate attentive communication is through body language.
Good communication skills.Figure 3.1summarizes effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills for both sending and receiving messages.Whether you are speaking or listening.
The Family Figure 3.2family is the basic unit of society.A family includes two or more people brought together by blood,marriage,adoption,or a desire for mutual support.
To nurture.To nurture is to fulfill physical,mental/emotional,and social needs.Nurturing families meet each other's needs on all three sides of the health triangle.
Family traits.we all have our ups and downs,good days and bad.A healthy familiy manages to get over the bumps.
A friendshipIs a special type of relationships between people who enjoy being together.Frienships are important.
Character Traits of Good Friends.It is important to choose friends who have positive values and attitudes.Good friends often have the same views of what is right and wrong.
Be reliable.or dependable.They keep their promises,and trustworthy.
Be loyal.or faithful.A loyal friend will not allow others to say untrue or mean things about you.
Empathy.the ability to identify and share another person's feelings.
Cooperation.means working together for the common good.You can build stronger friendships through mutual respect and support.
Peers.Peers as noted in Chapter 1,are friends and other people in your age group.During the teen years.Peers can give you support and confidence during the transition or move,toward adulthood.
Peer pressure.is the influence that people your age may have on you.Peer pressure can be something you feel indirectly or direct.
Positive Peer Pressure.can be either positive or negative.Positive peer pressure can inspire you to do something worthwhile.
Negative Peer Pressure.Standing up to negative peer pressure can be difficult.It is,neverthless,an important skill to learn.
Refusal skills.are ways of saying no.They are communication strategies for avoiding potencially harmfull situations.One way is to use the S.T.O.P. strategy.
S.T.O.P. strategy.Say no in a firm voice.-Tell why not.-Offer other ideas.-Promptly leave.Remember that you are not alone when you face a difficult situation.You can always get help from a trusted adult,parents or counselor will listen to your problem.
