DesignThe application of proper methods to produce a product that is both artistic and functional.
Elements of LayoutBody type, display type, images, and white space.
Page CompositionArranging the layout elements (Body type, display type, images, and white space) in a page layout program such as InDesign according to the specifications decided upon by the designer.
Body TypeType sizes that range form 4-point through 12-point that are used for setting used for setting straight matter.
Display TypeType sizes that range from 14-point and larger.
IllustrationsThe elements of layout that include the ornamentation, photographs, and artwork, such as line art.
White SpaceThe areas of the layout that are void of printed images. (This Space is Good!)
Thumbnail SketchesSimple, rapidly drawn designs of a layout. (1st drawings done in the design process)
Rough LayoutA redrawn version of a thumbnail sketch, closely resembling the final layout. (2nd drawings done in the the design process. Sometimes this step is omitted.)
Comprehensive LayoutA detailed layout showing how the printed piece will look when finished. (3rd and final drawings done before going to computer. Often this step is omitted)
Line ArtAn illustrated image (sometime could be as simple as a line) drawn by hand or using computer software that is solid containing only 100% of a color.
Continuous Tone CopyAn image with an infinite number of tone gradations between the lightest highlights and the darkest shadows.
EditingThe final preparation of the author’s or writer’s manuscript for publication, including checking the text, line art, and photographs
Page CompositionArranging the layout elements (Body type, display type, images, and white space) in a page layout program such as InDesign according to the specifications decided upon by the designer.
SpecificationsThe overall layout guidelines relating to such information as type style, type size, line width, color use, and page organization. This information is often given on a Job Ticket / Jacket or is created by a designer on a thumbnail, rough draft or comprehensive.
Copy fittingThe process of fitting together copy and illustrations in a specific amount of space. This usually takes place during composition. (In a page layout program like InDesign)
Color WheelA visual tool that illustrates the basics of color
Primary ColorsColors that can be used to generate secondary colors (Cannot be formed by mixing).
CopyAlso referred to as “text”
TextAlso referred to as “Copy”
