Vocabulary words you will need to know in our Response to Literature Essay unit.

| theme | The central or main idea, or "message" of a literary work |
| imagery | Making pictures into words, using the 5 senses |
| characterization | The way the author describes the character's words, looks, actions, and thoughts |
| symbolism | The technique or way of using an object to represent an idea or something abstract |
| protagonist | The central character of the literary work |
| antagonist | The character who works against the protagonist |
| mood | The emotion in a literary work (hopefulness, sadness, perseverance, etc) |
| simile | A figure of speech that uses "like" or "as" to compare two things that normally don't go together |
