| Black Codes | restricting African Americans from voting, sitting on juries, testifying against white men, the carrying of guns in public, and having certain jobs. |
| Freedman's Bureau | Government organization that helped newly freed men and women get on their feet by providing educational activities, clothing, food and medicine. |
| Reconstruction Acts of 1867 | -Split the South into 5 military districts, and the states had to have a military leader from the north (Marshall law). -They had to get rid of the black codes, and ratify the 14th amendment. -It banned confederate leaders from voting, and any who didn't pledge their allegiance to the U.S. -African Americans were to be able to vote for and serve as delegates to state constitutional conventions |
| Ku Klux Klan | A group of Southerners who opposed equal rights with African Americans and rebelled by destroying black schools, black churches, and also threatened others with burning crosses. |
| Compromise of 1877 | This effectively ends Reconstruction and Military Rule in the South |
