totalitarianism, a dictatorship where the government controls every part of a citizen’s life (work, food, religion, books, music, etc.)
fascism, a dictatorship that idolizes the person in charge as well as the nation
Kristallnacht (“Night of Broken Glass”), Nazis attacked Jews on the streets and ruined Jewish property, burning buildings and smashing windows
concentration camps, large prison camps where people forced to live and work in harsh conditions
nationalization, all businesses are controlled by the government
collectivization, the government owned the land and the peasants farmed it
purge, to remove or get rid of
sanctions, measures designed to stop trade and other economic contacts
appeasement, giving the “bad guy” part of what he wants to keep peace
Blitzkrieg (“Lighting War”), Hitler’s war tactic where his soldiers invaded new countries so fast that the country couldn’t respond

cash-and-carry policyAmerica wanted to stay out of the war, but wanted to help the Allies. This policy allowed Britain to buy supplies from the US as long as they transported them back to Britain themselves.
lend-lease actAs the war went on, it was clear that the Allies needed more help. America still didn’t want to actually fight, but this policy allowed the president to “lend” war supplies to any allied country.
scorched-earth policy, Stalin told the Soviet Union’s soldiers that if the Germans won, they should burn the land and destroy everything that could be useful to the Germans
Holocaust, the event where Jewish people were killed because of their religion and ethnicity
genocide, intentional, carefully planned killing of an entire people based on race, politics or culture.
D-Day, the day that American troops attacked the Germans in France, really starting the battle on land
