Unit 1: Vocabulary

AB
arcPart of a circle from one point on the circle to the other.
areaThe number of square units required to cover a surface.
bar graphA graph that uses horizontal or vertical bars to display data.
biased sampleA sample in which one or more parts of the population are favored over others.
box-and-whisker plotDisplays the spread of a data set using the 5 landmarks: min; lower quartile; median; upper quartile; max
broken-line graphA graph where data points are connected by line segments.
circle graphA graph using a circle which represents the whole. The interior is divided into parts.
double-stem plotA stem-and-leaf plot in which each stem is split into two parts.
interquartile range (IQR)The length of the interval between the lower and upper quartiles in a data set.
landmarkA notable feature of a data set; includes median
line graphA graph that uses line segments to show changes that occur over time.
line plotA number line with marks or dots that show frequency.
lower quartileIn an ordered data set
maximumThe largest amount; the greatest number in a set of data.
medianThe middle number in a set of numbers that are listed in order.
minimumThe smallest amount; the smallest number in a set of data.
modeThe value(s) that occur the most often in a set of data.
percent circleA tool on the geometry template that is used to measure and draw figures that involve percents.
perimeterThe distance around a closed 2 dimensional figure.
radiusThe distance from the center of a circle to a point on the circle.
random sampleA sample in which every member in the population has an equal chance of being selected.
rangeThe difference between the greatest (max) and least (min) numbers in a set of data.
sampleA part of a group chosen to represent the whole group.
sectorThe part of a circle that looks like a piece of pie. A sector is bounded by 2 radii and an arc of a circle.
side-by-side bar graphUses pairs of bars to compare two related data sets.
stacked bar graphBars are subdivided to show additional information.
stem & leaf plotA display of data where digits with larger place values are "stems" and digits with smaller place values are "leaves.
upper quartileThe median of the upper half of a data set
lower quartileThe median of the lower half of a data set
