| CONFLICT | the struggle between characters or forces in a story; problem |
| CLIMAX | the most exciting part of a story;the point at which the outcome of the conflict becomes apparent |
| CHARACTERS | people, animals or things presented as persons in a story |
| PLOT | the order in which actions happen in a story |
| THEME | the central or dominating idea in a work of literature, usually a message about life or human behavior |
| SETTING | the time and place a story happens (when, where & under what conditions) |
| TONE | the writer's attitude, manner and mood reflected in his/her writing |
| MOOD | the feeling or state of mind an author creates in a story |
| POINT OF VIEW | the way in which a reader is presented with the action of a story (1st, 3rd, omniscient, etc.) |
| FICTION | short stories and novels that are made up, not real |
