Learn the names and definitions of tools we use when sewing.

bobbin, A round metal or plastic spool that holds the bottom thread in place.
hand sewing needle, This needle has an eye at one end and a point at the other end.
scissors, Used to cut paper only.
pin cushion, Keeps needles and pins handy while you work.
seam or sewing gauge, 6" long with a slide; helps mark a hem or seam.
seam ripper, Used to cut and remove unwanted stitches.
tracing paper, A special waxed paper used to transfer pattern markings to fabric.
tape measure, A narrow strip of plastic or cloth used to measure large and rounded areas such as the body.
spool of thread, A very thin cord made mostly of cotton that holds seams together permanently.
sewing machine needle, This needle has an eye and and point at the same end.
screwdriver, used to tighten or loosen parts on the sewing machine.
tracing wheel, An instrument with serrated teeth on a wheel attached to a handle; used to transfer markings from patterns onto fabric with tracing paper.
pattern, A guide or diagram that you follow to make clothes or other things using a needle and thread.
shears, Scissors used for heavy duty cutting of fabric. One handle is larger than the other and they have a bent edge.
marking pencil, Pencil used to temporarily mark fabric.
straight pins, Used to hold the pattern to the fabric and to hold layers of fabric together for sewing.
